About this course

Fourteen allergens, one wrong answer too many.

Food Allergen Awareness Training gives everyone who prepares, serves or sells food the knowledge to keep customers with allergies safe and to meet the law on allergen information. Allergies happen when the immune system reacts to a normally harmless food as if it were a threat, and the number of people affected rises every year. For a food business, one wrong answer at the counter can be fatal.

The course explains the difference between allergies, intolerances and coeliac disease, works through the 14 allergens controlled by legislation and the additives that can trigger reactions, and looks at symptoms and what to do when a reaction happens. It then gets practical: the steps that reduce the risk of allergen cross-contact in storage, preparation, cooking and service, and how to monitor those controls.

It takes about sixty minutes online, on any device, with a test at the end and a certificate on completion. It's the natural companion to the HACCP Level 1 & 2 course and covers the information requirements of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 as they apply in Ireland.

Who needs it

Every food business must declare allergens.

EU Regulation 1169/2011 and Irish regulations require food businesses to give accurate allergen information for every dish and product, written or verbal, on request. Every person who serves or prepares food needs to know how.

  • Waiting and counter staff
  • Chefs and kitchen staff
  • Café, deli and takeaway teams
  • Care home, school and hospital catering
  • Food producers and labellers
  • Managers who write the allergen matrix

The law and guidance behind this course

Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers

requires food businesses to declare the 14 allergens for prepacked and non-prepacked food.

S.I. No. 489 of 2014

sets out how allergen information must be given for non-prepacked food in Ireland, including food sold in restaurants, cafés, delis and takeaways.

Is allergen training a legal requirement?

Food businesses must be able to give accurate allergen information for everything they sell. Staff can only do that if they've been trained, and inspectors ask how you did it.

Does it cover the 14 allergens?

Yes, each one, with the ingredients people don't expect them in.

Can I do it on my phone?

Yes. It works on a phone, tablet or laptop.

When do I get the certificate?

The moment you pass. Download it for your training file.

Can I retake the course later, for example when my certificate expires?

Unlimited attempts apply to the test, until you pass. Once you've passed, the course is complete and your certificate is issued. When it's time to renew, you buy the course again and get a new certificate with a new date.

Do I have to finish it in one sitting?

No. Your progress is saved automatically, and you have 12 months of access, so you can stop at any lesson and pick up later on any device.

Can I book it for a group?

Yes. Tell us how many people and where you are, and we'll price it for your team: online licences, a trainer at your premises or at our centre, or a live virtual classroom.
