About this course

Every hazard in the kitchen, before it hurts someone.

Health and Safety in Commercial Kitchens is an online course for everyone who works in a hotel, restaurant, café, canteen or catering kitchen, from kitchen porters and line cooks to head chefs and managers. Kitchens combine heat, sharp tools, wet floors, heavy loads, chemicals and pressure, and the injuries that follow are predictable. This course shows how to prevent them.

It covers the hazards that cause most kitchen accidents: fire, burns and scalds, chemical exposure, electrical risks around water, slips, trips and falls, and heat stress. It explains the personal protective equipment that helps and how to use it, how to assess the risks in your own kitchen, and how to respond when something goes wrong, from a burn to a fire to an electrical incident.

The course is self-paced online with a test at the end and a certificate on completion. It gives every kitchen worker the safety awareness the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act expects, and gives managers a simple way to induct new starters and show that the whole team has been trained.

Who needs it

Kitchens are the most dangerous room in hospitality.

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires employers to identify hazards, control them and train staff. This course gives every kitchen worker the safety awareness the Act expects, in one sitting.

  • Chefs, cooks and kitchen porters
  • New starters on induction
  • Supervisors and head chefs
  • Catering and canteen staff
  • Care home and hospital kitchens
  • Food production floors

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005

requires employers to identify hazards, assess risks, and provide the information, instruction and training employees need to work safely.

set the specific duties for workplaces, equipment, manual handling and protective equipment that apply in a kitchen.

Before you book

The questions we get every day.

Answered here so you don't have to wait on an email.

A chef wearing a hairnet and beard snood
Is this a legal requirement?

Employers must provide safety training under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. This course covers the kitchen-specific hazards that training needs to include.

Does it replace manual handling training?

No. It covers safe lifting awareness, but a full manual handling certificate is a separate course, which we also run.

Can I do it on my phone?

Yes. It works on a phone, tablet or laptop.

When do I get the certificate?

The moment you pass. Download it for your training file.

Can I retake the course later, for example when my certificate expires?

Unlimited attempts apply to the test, until you pass. Once you've passed, the course is complete and your certificate is issued. When it's time to renew, you buy the course again and get a new certificate with a new date.

Do I have to finish it in one sitting?

No. Your progress is saved automatically, and you have 12 months of access, so you can stop at any lesson and pick up later on any device.

Can I book it for a group?

Yes. Tell us how many people and where you are, and we'll price it for your team: online licences, a trainer at your premises or at our centre, or a live virtual classroom.
